Learn how SSP and IASIS MCN "prepare the soil" of the nervous system -- creating readiness for healing, connection, and relational growth.

Healing doesn’t happen through force. It unfolds through safety. At Kairos Counseling & Family Therapy, we often say that therapy begins when the nervous system feels safe enough to stay present with what once felt unbearable. Before we can plant seeds of new understanding, integration, and connection, we prepare the “garden bed” of the nervous system — softening, enriching, and making space for growth.
Two modalities that beautifully serve this preparatory process are the Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) and IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback (IASIS MCN). Each uniquely helps the body access greater states of regulation, openness, and receptivity — creating the conditions for deeper therapeutic work.
Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, the Safe & Sound Protocol is a listening intervention grounded in Polyvagal Theory. Through filtered music that emphasizes human vocal frequencies, SSP gently exercises the middle ear muscles and tunes the autonomic nervous system toward ventral vagal safety and connection.
When our nervous system can distinguish safety cues from threat cues, the body shifts out of chronic defense and into connection — the physiological foundation for relational healing.
In practice:
• SSP helps calm hyperarousal (fight/flight) and thaw hypoarousal (collapse/shutdown).
• It can reduce sensory sensitivities, anxiety, and social withdrawal.
• It supports deeper presence and co-regulation in relationships and therapy sessions.
In essence, SSP invites the body to listen differently — not only to sound, but to life itself.
While SSP speaks to the vagus nerve through the ear, IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback communicates directly with the brain through gentle, imperceptible electrical feedback. IASIS MCN uses micro-current signals (much less than a cellphone emits) to disrupt stuck neural patterns associated with trauma, anxiety, depression, or hypervigilance.
This “reset” effect allows the brain to move out of survival loops and return to more flexible, adaptive functioning. Clients often describe feeling calmer, clearer, and more grounded after just a few sessions.
Research and clinical reports show improvements in sleep, emotional regulation, focus, and overall stress resilience. In essence, IASIS MCN helps the brain remember how to rest — a crucial step before deeper emotional and trauma work can unfold.
Both SSP and IASIS MCN create a physiological readiness that allows the implicit — the unspoken, body-held stories — to emerge safely. When the body feels regulated, it no longer has to protect against overwhelming sensations or memories. It can allow.
This is the moment therapy deepens:
• EMDR, ETT, Sandtray, or Parts Work sessions become more accessible and integrative.
• The client’s inner system can engage rather than defend.
• Emotions, sensations, and memories long held in the body begin to move, release, and re-organize toward wholeness.
At Kairos Counseling & Family Therapy, we often use SSP and IASIS MCN as adjunctive therapies — companions to the experiential and relational work that follows. Just as you wouldn’t plant seeds in unprepared soil, we honor the body’s readiness as sacred ground for healing.
When the nervous system experiences more consistent safety, relationships begin to shift too. • We become more able to co-regulate — to be with others without losing ourselves. • We can repair and reconnect after conflict without collapse or attack. • We approach intimacy and attachment not from fear, but from curiosity and trust.
Healing the nervous system is not only self-work — it’s relational work. It changes how we show up in our marriages, families, friendships, and communities.
At Kairos Counseling & Family Therapy, SSP and IASIS MCN are part of an integrated, relationally-centered process. We view these tools as ways to nurture the soil — supporting the brain and body so that experiential therapies like EMDR, ETT, Sandtray, and Parts Work can take root and flourish.
Because when safety is felt, not forced, healing becomes possible. And like every well-tended garden, growth emerges naturally.
In our next blog post, "When the Body is Ready, the Story Can Heal: How SSP, IASIS MCN, EMDR, ETT & Sandtray Work Together at Kairos", we will explore more deeply how the therapies of EMDR, ETT, and Sandtray are richened by SSP and IASIS MCN.
