At Kairos Counseling, we view personality disorders through a compassionate lens—not as character flaws or permanent conditions, but as deeply ingrained survival adaptations. These patterns typically develop in response to early trauma, neglect, or unstable attachment relationships as the mind's way of coping with overwhelming circumstances. While personality disorders involve persistent difficulties with thinking, emotions, and interpersonal behavior, we firmly believe in their potential for transformation. Through targeted therapy, these long-standing protective mechanisms can evolve, allowing for greater emotional flexibility, healthier relationships, and a more integrated sense of self.
Our clinical team has extensive experience supporting individuals across the personality disorder spectrum. This includes helping those with Borderline Personality Disorder navigate emotional intensity and relationship challenges, working with Narcissistic Personality Disorder to address underlying vulnerability beneath grandiosity, and supporting those with Avoidant Personality Disorder in overcoming social inhibition. We also assist clients with Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) who struggle with perfectionism and control, along with other presentations like Dependent, Antisocial, Paranoid, Schizoid, and Schizotypal Personality Disorders. Each client receives care tailored to their specific needs and history.
Kairos Counseling employs an integrative treatment framework grounded in contemporary neuroscience and trauma research. Our foundation draws from Attachment Theory, Polyvagal Theory, and Interpersonal Neurobiology to understand how early experiences shape personality structure. We incorporate specialized modalities including Ego State Therapy to work with internal fragmentation, EMDR with Resource Development for trauma processing, and expressive therapies like Sandtray and Emotional Transformation Therapy (ETT). Additionally, we utilize neuro-supportive interventions such as IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback (MCN) and the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) to help regulate the nervous system—a crucial element in creating lasting change.
EMDR therapy plays a particularly valuable role in our work with personality disorders by directly addressing their traumatic origins. Many personality disorder symptoms stem from maladaptively stored memories—EMDR helps reprocess these experiences to reduce their ongoing influence. This approach effectively decreases emotional reactivity, helps integrate fragmented parts of self, and builds crucial internal resources for distress tolerance. By calming the nervous system's trauma responses, EMDR creates neurological conditions conducive to change, making it easier for clients to develop new, healthier patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating to others. When combined with other modalities in our integrated approach, EMDR can facilitate profound shifts in personality organization and functioning.
